Repetitive

This visualisation by David McCandless is highly repetitive. I’m sure there’s a technical term for this kind of ‘template’ – I just don’t know what.

I like the repetition. From far, the visual looks well-organised; up close, I’m drawn into ‘spotting the difference’ and making the comparisons which the visual’s focal question aims for. He could have chosen to use very dissimiliar icons/graphics for each of the definitions of ‘consciousness’, but went with repetition instead. The visual impact was greater (at least for me). I also wasted less time comparing definitions since I could zoom in – textually and visually – on the differences.

This particular visualisation reminds me of a few others I’ve seen before:
