(Pearls Before Swine comes from the wonderful pen of Stephan Pastis)
Thankfully our walk with the Lord is nothing like that. His promises are sure, and He gives us true understanding of Him and His Word. Though the promises may seem to dim and fade, or be slow in coming; or we are discouraged when we seem to take 3 steps forward and 2 steps back. Yet “do not let this one fact escape your notice, beloved, that with the Lord one day is like a thousand years, and a thousand years like one day. The Lord is not slow about His promise, as some count slowness, but is patient toward you, not wishing for any to perish but for all to come to repentance.” (2 Pet 3:8-9)
Only remain by the cross and keep standing close to it, to search the mystery of His wounds. Only lie very low and know more of your own nothingness (Spurgeon). Desire to love Him over your very life. Dwell in His presence and enjoy Him forever.
See if He will not respond with an intensity so tender, promises so radical, timing so perfect, love so immutable, grace so transformative.
We never have to fear being left dismayed with a dolphin tank-ful of tears and empty hopes.
